Phenoxyzone 20% Injection is a phenylbutazone preparation for horses — a synthetic, non-hormonal non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with combined anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity.
Composition
Active substance: phenylbutazone 200 mg per ml (20%), in sterile aqueous solution for injection.
How it works
Phenylbutazone inhibits cyclo-oxygenase and so blocks the production of prostaglandins, the mediators responsible for pain, swelling and fever at a site of inflammation. Because it acts on the cause of the inflammatory signal rather than only on pain perception, it reduces heat and swelling as well as discomfort. Its analgesic effect is closely linked to that anti-inflammatory action.
Indications
Phenylbutazone is indicated for the relief of inflammatory conditions of the musculoskeletal system in horses:
- muscular sprain, strain and overuse;
- tendonitis and tendovaginitis;
- arthritis, periarthritis and bursitis;
- acute joint injury and strain;
- myositis and neuritis;
- painful soft-tissue injuries such as contusions and distortions.
Contraindications and cautions
Do not use in animals with cardiac, hepatic or renal disease, in animals with blood dyscrasias, or where gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding is possible or suspected. Avoid in animals hypersensitive to the product. Use during pregnancy should be avoided where possible, particularly in the first trimester. Do not give with another NSAID concurrently or within 24 hours. Treated animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption.
Presentation and storage
Sterile injectable solution in a sealed vial. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature stated on the label. Keep out of reach of children.
Important
Phenylbutazone is a prohibited substance in most competition and racing jurisdictions and has defined detection times. Dose, route and duration of treatment must be determined by the attending veterinarian. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
