Flumex is a glucocorticoid, a chemical modification of prednisolone, which has greater anti-inflammatory properties and is 15 times more potent than hydrocortisone. Flumethasone is indicated for use in rheumatic, allergic, dermatologic, and other conditions known to respond to anti-inflammatory corticosteroids. Parenteral administration is recommended using various routes depending on the type of animal being treated. Intravenous (IV) administration of flumethasone may be indicated when a rapid route of administration is desired, such as in cases of poisoning, shock, or shock-like conditions. Flumethasone is commercially available as a steroid-free alcohol solution. While flumethasone does not work as quickly as corticosteroid phosphates and succinate esters (methylprednisolone sodium succinate, prednisolone sodium succinate, or dexamethasone sodium phosphate), it can be given either intramuscularly or intravenously and is useful for acute reactions such as hypersensitivity to insect stings or pollen reactions.4 Flumethasone is prescribed in camels as indicated for: 1) Musculoskeletal conditions due to inflammation, where there are no permanent structural changes, such as bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteomyelitis, and myositis. After treatment, an appropriate period of rest should be instituted to allow normal return of function to the affected part. 2) Allergic conditions such as urticaria (hives) and insect bites.3 In dogs, flumethasone injection is indicated for: 1) Musculoskeletal conditions due to inflammation of muscles or joints and accessory structures, where there are no permanent structural changes, such as arthritis, osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc syndrome, and myositis. In septic arthritis, antibacterial therapy should be given concomitantly. 2) Certain acute and chronic skin diseases of various etiologies to help control the itching, irritation and inflammation associated with these conditions. The drug has been shown to be useful in otitis externa in conjunction with topical medications for similar causes. 3) Allergic conditions such as urticaria and insect bites.
