Extra Wing is an injectable preparation for sport horses and camels combining sodium succinate with the nucleotides ATP and UTP. It is described as a neurotonic, energetic and muscle antitoxic, and is used in exhaustion, stress, cardiocirculatory disturbance and post-surgical recovery.
Composition
Per 100 ml: sodium succinate 20 g, adenosine triphosphate 1000 mg, uridine triphosphate 200 mg, with formulation agents. Succinate is a citric acid cycle intermediate and feeds directly into mitochondrial respiration. ATP is the cell’s immediate energy currency. UTP is the nucleotide involved in carbohydrate handling and in the synthesis of glycogen, the fuel store that a working muscle draws on.
Indications
Extra Wing is used in equines and camels for:
- exhaustion and prevention of exercise exhaustion;
- stress states;
- cardiocirculatory disorders;
- recovery following surgery;
- support of muscular blood flow and coronary circulation.
How it works
The preparation supplies substrates at two points of energy metabolism at once: succinate at the level of the mitochondrion, and the nucleotides at the level of immediate energy transfer and glycogen synthesis. The claimed effect on muscular blood flow and coronary vessels follows from adenosine nucleotide metabolism, since adenosine is a potent local vasodilator. As with all metabolic support, the effect depends on a deficit existing — supplying substrate to a well-conditioned, well-fed animal that is not short of it changes little.
Presentation and storage
Sterile injectable solution for intravenous administration. Intravenous injection must be given slowly and by someone competent to do so. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature given on the label. Do not freeze. Disinfect the stopper before each withdrawal and use a sterile needle and syringe. Keep out of reach of children.
Important
Dose, route and interval are set by the attending veterinarian for the individual animal. Cardiocirculatory disorder is listed as an indication, and it is also a condition that requires diagnosis before treatment — an arrhythmia or a valve problem is not managed with metabolic support. Preparations given to animals in work are subject to the medication rules of racing and competition authorities, including restrictions on administration in the period before competition; check the rules for your discipline and region before treating a competing animal. Withdrawal periods apply to animals destined for food production. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
