Pain Blocker is a plant-derived injectable analgesic preparation for horses and camels, based on a distillate of the pitcher plant (Sarraceniaceae). It belongs to the same family of products as Sarapin, long used in veterinary practice for regional analgesia.

Composition

Active component: sterile aqueous solution of the soluble salts of volatile bases from Sarraceniaceae, with benzyl alcohol as preservative. It contains no corticosteroid and no non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Stated benefits

  • helps reduce pain and inflammation;
  • does not weaken or damage cartilage, bone or joint structures the way repeated corticosteroid injection can;
  • plant-derived, non-hormonal formulation;
  • can be used alongside other supportive treatments under veterinary direction.

Typical use

Preparations of this type are used for regional analgesia in horses, frequently for chronic joint and soft-tissue pain, and are often given in combination with other agents as part of a treatment plan. They are described as more suited to slow, chronic pain than to sharp, acute pain.

What the evidence says

We prefer to be straightforward about this: the mechanism of the analgesic response to pitcher-plant distillate has never been fully identified, and the manufacturer of the original product has stated to regulators that the active ingredient has not been characterised. Controlled studies in the equine abaxial sesamoid block model have not demonstrated local anaesthetic activity. It is widely used in practice and many practitioners report benefit, but it should be understood as a supportive agent rather than a proven analgesic.

Presentation and storage

Sterile injectable solution in a sealed vial. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature stated on the label. Keep out of reach of children.

Important

Route, dose and treatment interval must be determined by the attending veterinarian, and injection near nerves requires veterinary skill. Competition rules on analgesic agents vary by jurisdiction. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
