Pentosul

Pentosul is an injectable joint-support preparation for horses and camels based on pentosan polysulfate sodium, a semi-synthetic polysulfated xylan derived from beech wood hemicellulose. It belongs to the group of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs, which act on the joint environment itself rather than only masking discomfort the way analgesics do.

How pentosan polysulfate works

Pentosan polysulfate sodium supports the joint on several fronts at once. It stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans by the synovial membrane, which helps restore the viscosity and lubricating quality of joint fluid. It also inhibits the catabolic enzymes that break down cartilage matrix, and improves blood flow through the subchondral bone by reducing fibrin deposits in small vessels. The result is a joint that is better nourished, better lubricated and under less destructive enzymatic load.

Indications

Preparations based on pentosan polysulfate sodium are used to control the clinical signs associated with osteoarthritis and degenerative joint disease. They are commonly chosen for:

• age-related and wear-related joint degeneration;
• joint problems in working, racing and endurance animals;
• supportive treatment after joint trauma;
• maintenance of joint comfort in animals under sustained training load.

Presentation and storage

Supplied as a sterile injectable solution in a sealed vial. Store in the original packaging, protected from light, at the temperature stated on the label, and do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Discard any unused portion of a single-use vial.

Important

Pentosan polysulfate has anticoagulant properties, so it is not suitable for every animal — particularly those with clotting disorders, active bleeding, or those undergoing surgery.
