Phenyl-k 100

Phenyl-k 100 is an injectable phenylbutazone preparation for horses and camels. Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that combines anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activity in a single molecule, which is why it remains one of the most widely used agents in equine musculoskeletal medicine.

Composition

Active substance: phenylbutazone, in sterile solution for injection. Concentration and pack size as stated on the vial label.

How it works

Phenylbutazone inhibits the cyclo-oxygenase enzyme, cutting the production of prostaglandins that drive pain, swelling and fever at the site of injury. Reducing those mediators lowers heat and swelling in the affected tissue and relieves the associated pain, which in turn supports a return to normal movement.

Indications

Used for a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders:

• muscular strain, sprain and overuse;
• tendonitis and inflammation of tendon sheaths;
• arthritic conditions and periarthritis;
• bursitis and myositis;
• acute joint injury;
• febrile conditions where reduction of fever is indicated.

Contraindications and cautions

Not for use in animals with cardiac, hepatic or renal disease, with blood dyscrasias, or where gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding is suspected. Avoid in animals hypersensitive to phenylbutazone, and avoid use in pregnancy where possible. Do not combine with other NSAIDs concurrently or within 24 hours. Animals treated with phenylbutazone must not enter the human food chain.

Presentation and storage

Sterile injectable solution in a sealed vial. Store in the original packaging, protected from light, at the temperature given on the label. Use a sterile needle for each withdrawal and disinfect the stopper first. Keep out of reach of children.
