Florfenicol, spiramycin and prednisolone injection for respiratory tract disease, enteritis and pasteurellosis in cattle, pigs and poultry.

Spirocol F.S.P is an injectable preparation for respiratory tract disease in livestock and poultry. It combines two antibiotics with a corticosteroid: florfenicol, spiramycin adipate and prednisolone — antimicrobial cover against the organisms involved, plus suppression of the inflammation they provoke.

Composition

Active substances: florfenicol, spiramycin adipate and prednisolone. Florfenicol is a broad-spectrum amphenicol particularly associated with respiratory pathogens in cattle and pigs. Spiramycin is a macrolide, concentrating well in lung tissue. Prednisolone is an intermediate-potency corticosteroid included to reduce the inflammatory damage and the swelling that make a pneumonic animal struggle to breathe.

Indications

Cattle and pigs:

  • pneumonia and broncho-pneumonia, particularly pneumonia caused by Pasteurella in cattle;
  • swine influenza and atrophic rhinitis;
  • enteritis, diarrhoea and dysentery;
  • erysipelas, pasteurellosis and salmonellosis.

Poultry: chronic respiratory disease, swollen face and eyes, salmonellosis and pasteurellosis.

How it works

The two antibiotics attack the bacteria from different directions, which broadens the spectrum and makes resistance less likely to defeat the whole preparation. The corticosteroid does nothing antibacterial; it limits the inflammatory response in the airway, so the animal breathes more easily while the antibiotics work. That division of labour is the reason a corticosteroid is acceptable here at all — alone, it would suppress the signs while the infection advanced.

Presentation and storage

Sterile injectable solution for intramuscular administration. Store in a cool place, protected from direct sunlight, at the temperature given on the label. Do not freeze. Disinfect the stopper before each withdrawal and use a sterile needle and syringe. Keep out of reach of children. For veterinary use only.

Important

Intramuscular injection; dose by body weight and species according to the label, and complete the full course rather than stopping when the animal looks better — a shortened antibiotic course is how resistance is bred. The withdrawal period before slaughter is stated on the label and must be observed; this is a food-animal product and the consequences of ignoring it fall on the whole supply chain. Do not use in animals hypersensitive to amphenicols or macrolides. Dose, route and duration are set by the attending veterinarian. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
