Tonarsyl is a cardiac metabolic analeptic from Vetoquinol, used in cattle, horses and dogs where the heart and tissues need support in coping with oxygen shortage.
Composition
Active substance: inosine, 25 mg per ml. Excipients per ml: benzyl alcohol 15 mg, anhydrous sodium sulphite 0.20 mg. Supplied in 50 ml bottles.
How it works
Inosine is a purine nucleoside that sits directly in the cell’s energy pathways. It supports the regeneration of adenosine triphosphate in cardiac muscle, improves the way tissue tolerates a period of low oxygen, and assists metabolic recovery once normal oxygen supply is restored. That combination is what makes it useful both in acute hypoxia and in recovery after heavy exertion.
Indications
- Beef and dairy cattle: treatment of hypoxia following dystocic delivery, and as an aid in respiratory problems.
- Horses: as an aid in preparation for exercise and as an aid in recovery afterwards.
- Dogs: as a cardiac tonic during anaesthesia.
Typical situations
In cattle practice the classic application is the calf that has had a difficult delivery and is slow to establish normal breathing. In equine practice it is used around periods of heavy work, where the aim is to support cardiac metabolism and shorten recovery rather than to alter performance. In small-animal practice it is used to support the heart through anaesthesia.
Presentation and storage
Sterile injectable solution, 50 ml bottle. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature stated on the label. Do not freeze. Disinfect the stopper and use a sterile needle for each withdrawal. Keep out of reach of children.
Important
Route of administration differs by species and indication, and dose must be determined by the attending veterinarian for the individual animal. Competition and racing rules on metabolic agents vary by jurisdiction — check before use in a competing animal. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
