FURODEX is a dual-action injectable solution for cattle, horses and camels that combines a loop diuretic with a corticosteroid: furosemide and dexamethasone. The combination targets fluid accumulation and the inflammation that often accompanies it in a single preparation.
Composition
Active substances: furosemide and dexamethasone (as the 21-phosphate ester), in sterile solution for injection. Exact concentrations are stated on the vial label.
How it works
Furosemide acts on the ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidney, blocking sodium and chloride reabsorption. Water follows the electrolytes, producing a rapid, marked increase in urine output and drawing accumulated fluid out of tissues and body cavities. Dexamethasone, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid, reduces the inflammatory component — capillary permeability, cellular infiltration and mediator release — so that the underlying cause of the swelling is also addressed.
Indications
- reduction of oedema and ascites;
- elimination of fluid accumulation in tissues and body cavities;
- post-parturient udder oedema in cattle;
- acute non-inflammatory tissue oedema;
- oedema associated with cardiac insufficiency, as directed by a veterinarian;
- inflammatory swelling where a corticosteroid is indicated alongside diuresis.
Cautions
Diuretic therapy depletes water and electrolytes; animals must have free access to drinking water, and electrolyte balance should be monitored during treatment. Corticosteroids may mask signs of infection and are not suitable in every animal. Not for use in dehydrated animals, in anuria, or in animals with electrolyte disturbances. Withdrawal periods apply to animals destined for food production.
Presentation and storage
Sterile injectable solution in a sealed vial. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature on the label. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Important
Furosemide is a prohibited substance in most racing jurisdictions. Dose, route and duration must be determined by the attending veterinarian. This page is product information, not veterinary advice.
