K-99 is an injectable rehydration and recovery preparation for horses, camels and racing dogs, supplied in a 100 ml vial. It combines amino acids, electrolytes, adenosine triphosphate and B vitamins in a single slow intravenous solution, for animals that are weakened, dehydrated or recovering from heavy demands.

Composition

A source of amino acids, adenosine triphosphate, electrolytes and B-group vitamins. Each element addresses a different deficit: electrolytes replace what is lost in sweat, amino acids supply the substrate for tissue repair, B vitamins act as cofactors in energy metabolism, and ATP contributes directly to the cellular energy pool.

Indications

K-99 is used as supportive therapy in:

• weakened animals and those subjected to intense physical effort;
• stress, shock and dehydration;
• severe diarrhoea and vomiting, where fluid and electrolyte losses are substantial;
• convalescence and post-operative recovery;
• recovery after transport, heat stress or sustained work.

How it works

An animal that has worked hard in heat is short of water, short of electrolytes and short of the substrates its muscles use to generate energy. Replacing these intravenously corrects the deficit faster than the gut can, which is the point of giving it by injection rather than in feed or water. It is worth being precise about the limits: this is replacement, not enhancement. It restores an animal towards its own baseline and does nothing for one that is already there.

Presentation and storage

Sterile injectable solution, 100 ml vial, for slow intravenous administration. Intravenous injection must be given slowly and by someone competent to do so — rapid administration of an electrolyte solution can disturb cardiac rhythm. Store in the original carton, protected from light, at the temperature given on the label. Do not freeze. Disinfect the stopper before each withdrawal and use a sterile needle and syringe. Keep out of reach of children.

Important

Dose differs by species and body weight; follow the label and the direction of the attending veterinarian. Severe dehydration, persistent diarrhoea and shock are conditions requiring diagnosis and veterinary management — a supportive infusion buys time and does not replace that. Check the status of the components under the rules of your racing or competition authority before treating a competing animal. Withdrawal periods apply to animals destined for food production.
